Visual Research

Image sourcing, photography curation, and rights licensing for editorial features at MR PORTER Journal, Trippin, and Vogue (Condé Nast). Work spans fine art photography (estates, foundations, galleries), entertainment IP (film stills, studio rights), runway and fashion calendar imagery (IMAXtree and beyond), and multi-discipline publishing rights from broadcast, publisher, gallery, theatre, and archive.

The Task

Visual research and image sourcing for a MR PORTER Journal feature marking Black History Month UK, published October 2021. Working with writer Fedora Abu to source imagery across nine cultural recommendations spanning podcasts, books, television, exhibitions, theatre, and archival photography, each with its own rights-holder and licensing regime.

The Outcome

Licensed imagery across a broad range of source types: BBC and ITV broadcast stills (Uprising, Stephen), publisher cover imagery from Penguin and Penguin Press (Assembly, What White People Can Do Next, Manifesto), gallery and artist representation (Lisson Gallery for John Akomfrah's The Monuments of Being), theatre production photography (Soho Theatre and the National Theatre), and historic archive imagery (Charlie Phillips's documentation of Notting Hill via Akehurst Creative Management). Each source type required different rights conversations, demonstrating the full breadth of editorial image sourcing across cultural disciplines.
