Eight Striking Images Of New York City Through The Decades
2021
The Task

Concepted and researched a visual essay for the MR PORTER Journal celebrating New York street photography across the decades, timed to three concurrent photography exhibitions in autumn 2021: Jamel Shabazz's Prospect Park: An Oasis In Brooklyn, Vivian Maier at the Musée du Luxembourg, and Bruce Davidson at Magnum Photos' Paris gallery. Publishing a visual essay that read New York through eight photographers' lenses, sourcing the imagery, securing licensing, and shaping the editorial frame.

The Outcome

Curated eight photographers spanning seven decades of New York: Saul Leiter (1957), Vivian Maier (1954), Joel Meyerowitz (1968), Joseph Rodriguez (1977–87), Bruce Davidson (1980), Jamel Shabazz (1997), Amani Willett (2005), and Andre D Wagner (2017). Sourced and licensed each image through the relevant estate, foundation, or gallery (Saul Leiter Foundation, Maloof Collection / Howard Greenberg Gallery, Magnum Photos, Gallery Stock), handing the editorial team a curated set of rights-cleared work to write around. The piece sat as part of MR PORTER's broader Style Council framing for the city.
