The Task
Three long-form authored features for Trippin across 2022, each reading a cultural subject seriously rather than as travel content | ethical photography practice across four continents, Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide's work on Indigenous identity, and the cultural and legal history of tattooing in Japan.
The Outcome
Authored 6 Photographers on What Ethical Photography Means to Them, curating six photographers across four continents on the power dynamics of documenting unfamiliar places. Wrote An Exploration of Mexico Through the Lens of Graciela Iturbide, reading her Juchitán and Seri people series through the ethics of the photographer's gaze. Built A History of Tattooing in Japan across three structural arcs, from Ainu ritual practice through Edo-period criminal branding to the contemporary legal grey area, with visual research surfacing four photographers' work on Japanese tattoo culture.
